Here's what some of our supporters have to say about their experience: "The [HCC] workshop was truly a blessing for me. It is something that filled a void I have had for the past several years. Being able to interact with the women after was great. It was an an opportunity to both have one on one time and get immediate feed back that our message came across the right way and that they could relate to it... It was priceless!!! ... I am happy to be a part of this organization and look forward to the impact I know we will have!!! ADELANTE!!!!! " -Jennifer Medina, volunteer
The Latina Army has been presenting motivational workshops to Latinas at Hill Regional Career Magnet High School since November. They have reached 83 Latinas through 6 initial workshops and a second, follow-up session for each of the participants, 12 workshops in all.
The "accomplished role models," Nancy and her volunteers, are always punctual and very professional. But far beyond those superficial details, they bring a powerful message to a captivated audience every time they present. They create a strong rapport with the students by sharing their backgrounds, and keep the students' attention by sharing shocking facts and dire statistics reflecting the status of Latinas in the United States. The next step is arming the students with skills and tools to motivate them to create a life they deserve. They do not simply lecture the students; however, they completely immerse them in learning by providing notebooks for them and having them participate in exercises to practice the new skills they are learning. All of the students have been completely engaged. Many of the students are very willing to share stories and feelings due to an excitement these women are able to elicit in them.
The students have shared many testimonials, which evidence the strong impact the Latina Army has had on them. After the initial session, the testimonials already evidence inspirational messages with words like "really great," "motivational," "very helpful," "positive," and "inspiring." Not too many can brag about being able to speak to students for 60 minutes and have them say, "I started to believe my dream that I could really do this." Many students cannot wait to return to the second session to share the successes they have had implementing what they have learned. Their testimonials continue: "The goal setting and the personal rules helped to earn my confidence and get me organized. Thank you so much." "Journaling has helped me express my feelings." "This workshop has helped me to improve my attitude." And, "I wish we did it more than twice." They fully participate and interact freely with the presenters. Literature is distributed to the students and contact information to help them stay connected.
Nancy is totally committed to guiding Latinas to success so that they can have a strong impact in the future of our country. After each session, she critiques and reviews the results and constantly strives to develop and improve her presentation. Her dedication, enthusiasm, and genuineness abounds as she presents her message to the students, and they are listening.
